Summer Ghost Movie Coming To North America This Summer

The Summer Ghost anime movie is heading to North America sometime in summer 2022, GKIDS has announced. It will be available in both Japanese and an English dub.

The movie, which released in Japan last November, follows Tomoya Sugisaki, Aoi Harukawa, and Ryo Kobayashi, who are troubled high schoolers that become acquainted through the internet. The three teens wish to meet the “Summer Ghost,” an urban legend and ghost in the form of a young woman who is said to appear when there are fireworks. 

The staff includes illustrator loundraw as director, author Otsuichi as scriptwriter, and Akira KosemuraToma ItokoGuiano, and HIDEYA KOJIMA as music composers. loundraw is also responsible for the original character designs and the original concept for the film. FLAT Studio, which loundraw founded, is the animation production company.

Meanwhile, the cast includes Chiaki Kobayashi as TomoyaMiyuri Shimabukuro as Aoi, Nobunaga Shimazaki as Ryo, and Rina Kawaei as the “Summer Ghost” Ayane Sato. 

Summer Ghost is part of loundraw’s Project Common multimedia project and is his movie directorial debut. Prior to founding FLAT Studio, loundraw was an illustrator who debuted in 2013 by contributing to the cover of the novel Hoshi no Nemuru Mizuumi e -Ai wo Sagashi Ni-. He later contributed to works like I Want To Eat Your Pancreas and Kimi wa Tsukiyo ni Hikari Kagayaku. He was also credited with the original character designs for Vivy -Fluorite Eye’s Song-. 

FLAT Studio has previously produced several shorts including Ichiban Chikakute Tooi Hoshi, which was a collaboration between Summer Ghost and the Z-Kai education group.
