At Warner Bros. Discovery’s Upfronts presentation, Adult Swim has announced that it will be producing a Rick and Morty anime series and an original anime series called Ninja Kamui. Both series will premiere on Adult Swim and HBO Max.
Billed as Rick and Morty: The Anime, the series will be a “10-episode adventure” that will be set in a separate continuity from the main series, although it will incorporate some themes and events from it. Telecom Animation Film will be in charge of the animation production.
Takashi Sano (Tower of God) will be in charge of the project. He has previously directed the two Rick and Morty anime shorts Rick and Morty vs. Genocider and Summer Meets God (Rick Meets Evil). A fourth anime short titled The Great Yokai Battle of Akihabara was released last October, directed by Masaru Matsumoto and written by Naohiro Fukushima (Fanfare of Adolescence). It was animated by Yamato Works Inc and produced by Sola Entertainment
Meanwhile, Sunghoo Park (JUJUTSU KAISEN) will be creating an original anime project called Ninja Kamui. It will follow a former ninja named Joe Higan, who ran away from his clan and escaped into hiding with his family to America. One night, he is ambushed by a team of assassins who exact revenge on Joe and his family for betraying them. After his apparent “death,” he returns as his former self — Ninja Kamui — to avenge his close family and friends. Combining his ancient skills with advanced weaponry, he’ll face off against deadly assassins, robots, and other ninjas to destroy the clan that created him.
Takesha Okazaki (Platonic Chain) is contributing character designs for Ninja Kamui. E&H Production and Sola Entertainment are producing the series.
Adult Swim has co-produced a variety of anime productions including Blade Runner: Black Lotus, Housing Complex C, a sequel to FLCL, and the forthcoming anime adaptation of Junji Ito’s Uzumaki. They have also collaborated with Crunchyroll on Shenmue: The Animation and Fena: Pirate Princess.
