Odd Taxi: In The Woods has grossed over 130 million yen (~US$1 million) since its April 1 debut in Japan, according to a report from Mantan Web.
While not a massive sum when viewed on its own — Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween made around 1.38 billion yen/US$10.7 million in its first two days last week, according to Kogyo Tsushin — Odd Taxi: In The Woods‘s gross is considered to be successful due to the movie’s small-scale release (it opened in 34 cinemas). A statement provided by producer Daisuke Hiraga to Mantan Web noted that he was pleased by the number of people who came to watch the film.
A large sum of the movie’s gross came from its first three days, where it made over 52 million yen (~US$404 thousand).
Odd Taxi: In The Woods is a recap of the Spring 2021 Odd Taxi mystery series that also depicts events that take place after the series’ finale. It will stream on Crunchyroll at a later date.
Crunchyroll describes the series as:
This town should look familiar, but suddenly, it’s not. The taxi driver Odokawa lives a very mundane life. He has no family, doesn’t really hang out with others, and he’s an oddball who is narrow-minded and doesn’t talk much. The only people he can call his friends are his doctor, Gouriki and his classmate from high school, Kakibana. All of his patrons seem to be slightly odd themselves. The college student who wants to be noticed online, Kabasawa. A nurse with secrets, Shirakawa. A comedy duo, the Homosapiens… All these mundane conversations somehow lead to a girl who’s gone missing.
Like the series, the main staff of the movie includes Mugi Kinoshita as director, Norio Nitta as assistant director, Kazuya Konomoto as scriptwriter, and Kinoshita and Hiromi Nakayama as character designers. P.I.C.S. and OLM are the animation production companies. Natsuki Hanae voices the taxi-driving protagonist Hiroshi Odokawa,
