The Quintessential Quintuplets movie ended its first weekend at the Japanese box office (May 21 to May 22) at second place, dethroning Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween as the top-grossing anime film at the weekend box office. The movie debuted in Japan on May 20 and scored a total gross of 390 million yen (~US$3.05 million) in its first three days.

The Quintessential Quintuplets Twitter account celebrated the movie’s debut box office performance by tweeting that it was ranked #1 out of the freshly released movies. The account also said that over 290 thousand people had watched the movie during its first three days.

Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween, which was pushed from the top spot by the Hideaki Anno-written Shin Ultraman live-action movie last week, further dropped to third place on the weekend ranking following The Quintessential Quintuplets movie’s debut. However, the film still managed a weekend gross of 238 million yen (~US$1.86 million), only slightly lower than The Quintessential Quintuplets‘s 267 million yen (~US$2,09 million) despite premiering back in April 15. Additionally, it is now placed 77th at the all-time ranking — surpassing the #83 ranking of last year’s Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet — with 7.99 billion yen (~US$62.5 million).

Crayon Shin-chan: Mononoke Ninja Chinpuden also remained on the weekend ranking at fifth place. It has grossed over 1.7 billion yen (~US$13.3 million) in total since debuting on April 22. Meanwhile, the new Fullmetal Alchemist live-action movie Fukushuusha Scar (Scar the Avenger), which is the first of the two-parter Fullmetal Alchemist: The Final Chapter, ended its first weekend at #9 after premiering on the same date as The Quintessential Quintuplets movie.
