The official Twitter account for the Made in Abyss anime has announced that the upcoming second season will premiere in July 2022. An exact broadcast date is still to be determined. They also released a new key visual featuring Riko, Reg, and Nanachi.
The second season will be titled Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun. An initial PV trailer and key visual was promoted last November, highlighting four new cast members for the anime.

The returning voice cast includes Miyu Tomita as Riko, Mariya Ise as Reg, and Shiori Izawa as Nanachi. Joining them are Misaki Kuno as Faputa, Yuka Terasaki as Vueko, Hiroaki Hirata as Wazukyan, and Mitsuki Saiga as Belaf.
Production staff members from the first season of Made in Abyss will be returning to work on the second season. That includes Masayuki Kojima as director, Hitoshi Haga as assistant director, Hideyuki Kurata as scriptwriter, Kazuchika Kise as character designer, Takakura Takeshi as design leader, Osamu Masuyama as art director, Misao Yamashita as color designer, Ema Tsunetaka as photography director, and Kevin Penkin as music composer. Kinema Citrus is in charge of animation production.
The franchise also inspired a film titled Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul that premiered in Japan in January 2020. The Golden City of the Scorching Sun is a direct follow-up to the film’s ending.

Sentai Filmworks has licensed the second season, as well as the first season and all the series’ feature length films. They released the first season in North America and describe it as:
The “Abyss” is the last unexplored region, an enormous and treacherous cave system filled with ancient relics and strange creatures. Only the bravest of adventurers can traverse its depths, earning them the nickname, “Cave Raiders.” Within the depths of the Abyss, a girl named Riko stumbles upon a robot who looks like a young boy. Tantalized by the Abyss, Riko and her new friend descend into uncharted territory to unlock its mysteries, but what lies in wait for them in the darkness?
